The secrets and tips from these studio drumming greats are seldom found… So now, up-and-coming generations of drummers can gain incredible insights into the art of studio drumming.

David Hicks

David has toured and/or recorded with many of Australia’s music legends, including Grace Knight, Wendy Matthews, Mark Vincent, Max Merritt, Doug Parkinson, Colleen Hewett, Glenn Shorrock, Brian Cadd, Normie Rowe, Bob Starkie, Kevin Johnson, The Bushwackers, Allan Zavod and Andy Cowan…and possibly the most popular of all, The Seekers, on their UK/Australasian tours between 2004 – 2014.

In 2016 and 2018 he backed international star Patrizio Buanne on his national tour, and in 1990 backed New York trumpeter Randy Brecker.

About David Hicks

Born in Melbourne, David was drawn to the drums at the age of eight, then after studying, practising and performing through his teens, David turned professional in 1977.

He has toured and/or recorded with many of Australia’s music legends, including Grace Knight, Wendy Matthews, Mark Vincent, Max Merritt, Doug Parkinson, Colleen Hewett, Glenn Shorrock, Brian Cadd, Normie Rowe, Bob Starkie, Kevin Johnson, The Bushwackers, Allan Zavod and Andy Cowan…and possibly the most popular of all, The Seekers, on their UK/Australasian tours between 2004 – 2014.

In 2016 and 2018 he backed international star Patrizio Buanne on his national tour, and in 1990 backed New York trumpeter Randy Brecker.

In Melbourne, David freelances and records with original acts such as Bob Valentine and the Band Of Renown, Dig We Must (featured at White Night and Wangaratta Jazz Festival in 2016, Eltham Jazz Festival in 2018) – (to hear examples, search Spotify)…. Wilbur Wilde, Whirling Furphies and various big bands such as Absolute Big Band, Paris Cat Big Band, Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra as well as John Montesante Dectet. His corporate work involves backing singers such as David Campbell, Andrew O’Keefe, and Tom Burlinson.

David has been playing in professional theatre pits since the Melbourne premiere of Les Miserables in 1988, most recently in Wicked, Mary Poppins, The Producers, West Side Story, Cabaret, The Bodyguard and Aladdin.

He has taught percussion since 1982, Recently retiring after 22 years at Scotch College in Melbourne, and has worked as an VCE Drum Kit assessor.

David is a featured endorsee of DW drums and percussion, Zildjian cymbals (44 years now), Vic Firth and Evans.
